Published Date: 27 August 2008
FRAUDSTERS have launched an identity theft scam after stealing an order pad from a town centre Driffield greengrocery store.
Two men were captured on CCTV as they took the pad containing customer details from Rafters.

They later used the order information to cold call genuine customers, claiming that they needed to re-check the credit card details to process orders for
flowers.

Andy Rafter, the owner of the shop, said the calls were a scam and people should not give out their credit card details.

He said the stolen order pad did not contain credit card details. It merely showed the name of the person who ordered flowers, their telephone number and the delivery address.

The matter was reported to police the moment it came to light and Mr Rafter has very clear CCTV images showing two men as they stole the order pad from the floral counter at the rear of the shop. These images have been made available to the police.

The pad is thought to have contained the order details of around 20 customers. Several of them have had unauthorised amounts of money taken from their accounts.

Mr Rafter said the matter came to light when one of his customers said that they had been contacted by someone claiming to be from Rafters and asking for credit card details as an original in-shop transaction for flowers had been declined.

Several minutes later another person phoned to say they had also received a suspicious call.

On at least one occasion, one of the fraudsters has given his name to customers as Adam Rafter. There is no such person working at the shop.
Mr Rafter told the Driffield Times: "We have not phoned anyone asking for credit card details. It is a scam.

"We did some digging and went back through the CCTV and found a recording of these two guys stealing an order pad.

"The images are very clear and we have been in touch with the police."
